Reaping the Wicked
Revelation 14:14-20

Introduction

This morning we will be examining Revelation 14:14-20 which describes the reaping of the wicked that will occur at the end of the great tribulation period. However, since it has been five weeks since the last sermon from Revelation, I want to quickly review what has been covered so far in order to set the context of this passage and where it fits in the flow of thought in the book.

Review

Introduction & Letters – Revelation 1-3. About A.D. 95 while the apostle John was exiled to the isle of Patmos, he was in the Spirit of the Lord when he received a revelation from the glorified Jesus Christ who commanded him to write down the things he had seen, the things which are and the things which shall take place (Rev. 1). John then wrote down a letter from Jesus to each of seven different churches in cities in the Roman province of Asia – Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea. Each letter commended the particular church for what they were doing write, reproved them for what they were doing wrong, and pronounced the blessing that would be given to those that heeded and obeyed.

The Scene in Heaven – Revelation 4 & 5. John is taken to heaven in the spirit where he sees God on His glorious throne surrounded by four living creatures who pronounce Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God, The Almighty, who was and who is and who is to come. To the right of the throne were twenty-four elders worshiping God. John then saw a scroll with seven seals that no one could open until the Lion from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, the Lamb standing as if slain came. The four living creatures began to proclaim the worthiness of the Lamb, then the twenty-four elders and myriads of angels joined in, soon joined by all of creation.

The Seal Judgments – Revelation 6 records what will happen as each of the first six seals are broken as follows: The horseman on the white horse goes out conquering and to conquer. The horseman on the red horse goes out taking away peace from the earth and bringing war. The horseman on the black horse goes out bringing famine. The last horseman goes out riding a pale horse bringing death to a fourth of the earth by sword, famine, pestilence and wild beasts. The fifth seal reveals the souls of martyrs underneath the altar in heaven crying out to avenge their blood on those who dwell on the earth. The sixth seal brings a great earthquake and celestial signs of the sun being darkened, the moon looking like blood and stars falling from the sky. This results in the people on the earth trying to hide in caves and among rocks in the mountains to avoid God and the wrath of the Lamb.

First Interlude – Revelation 7 records an interlude in the sequence of action to explain the setting aside of the 144,000 Jewish slaves of God who are sealed to protect them from the wrath of God. It also explains the origin of the innumerable multitude of martyrs from out of the great tribulation that will then be in heaven.

The Trumpet Judgments – Revelation 8 & 9 records the breaking of the seventh seal which brings forth the trumpet judgments. The first trumpet brings hail and fire mixed with blood that burns up a third of trees & all the grass. The second trumpet brings a great mountain burning with fire that is thrown into the sea turning a third of it into blood and killing a third of sea creatures and destroying a third of the ships. The third trumpet causes a great star to fall from heaven that turns a third of the fresh water into wormwood causing many men to die. The fourth trumpet results in a third of the sun, a third of the moon and third of the stars to be darkened and not shine for a third of the day. Three woes are then pronounced because of the three remaining trumpet judgments.

The fifth trumpet releases strange flying creatures from the abyss that are permitted for five months to torment with their stings that are like a scorpion only those people who do not have God’s seal upon them. They are not permitted to kill and death flees from mankind though people long to die because of the torment.

The sixth trumpet releases four angels that bring about the death of a third of mankind by the smoke, fire and brimstone that come from the mouths of two hundred million strange “horses” that have tails like serpents that also cause harm.

Second Interlude. Revelation 10 & 11 describe events and actions that take place before the seventh trumpet. This includes a strong angel with a little book who cries out and is answered by seven peals of thunder which John is not allowed to write down. John is told to eat the little book which is sweet to his taste but it turns his stomach bitter. He is then told he must prophesy again concerning peoples, nations, tongues and kings.

The 1,260 day prophetic ministry of the two witnesses is then described during which time they cannot be harmed and can kill anyone seeking to harm them. At the end of that time they are killed by the beast from the abyss which brings about rejoicing by the wicked of the world, but that will be cut short when three and a half days later God raises them from the dead and brings them up to heaven. Placing exactly where this 3 ½ years of ministry by these two witnesses within the sequence of seal and trumpet judgments is uncertain, but within the very hour they are resurrected and ascend to heaven there is a great earthquake that destroys a tenth of Jerusalem and kills seven thousand people. The rest are terrified and give glory to the God of heaven. That will conclude the second woe.

The Seventh Trumpet. Revelation 11:15-18 is the blowing of the seventh trumpet which will bring about immediately the proclamation in heaven that “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He will reign forever and ever” (Vs. 15). The twenty-four elders then join in with thanksgiving and another proleptic proclamation on God giving reward to His slaves and judging and destroying the wicked – future events so certain they are stated as having already happened. Verse 19 ends the chapter with the sanctuary of God which is in heaven being opened, the Ark of His covenant appearing in His sanctuary, and flashes of lightning, sounds and peals of thunder, and an earthquake and a great hailstorm occurring. John will continue this sequence of events in Revelation 15 which describes the scene in heaven just prior to the bowl judgments which begin in Revelation 16

Parenthetical Explanations – Revelation 12-14 is parenthetical in the sense that it does not advance the chronological narrative of the future, but instead explains the background, characters and plot of what will come in the final stages of God’s judgments which will be expressed in the bowls of wrath and culminate in the second coming of Messiah to conquer the earth. Chapter 12 begins with John recording the two great signs he sees in heaven. The woman is a symbol of the nation of Israel, the child Messiah, and the great red dragon is a symbol of Satan, also known as the devil, the deceiver of the world and accuser of the brethren. He then describes the actions and interaction of these symbolic characters going all the way back to Satan’s fall into sin and a third of the angels following him. It then points out the dragon’s efforts to thwart God’s plan of redemption. Despite Satan’s many efforts, he failed to prevent Messiah from being born or “devour” Him after His birth, or before Jesus paid the price to redeem man with His own sacrificial death on the cross. Jesus’ resurrection proved all His claims and promises are true, and man can be forgiven his sin and adopted into God’s family through faith in Him. Satan has been utterly defeated in his efforts to stop God’s plan of redemption, and after Jesus’ ascension, Satan has no longer been able to attack Him directly. All of that is past history for us as it was when John wrote it down.

Future: Satan’s Wars. Revelation 12:7-17 jumps to the future in which Satan will lead his demons in a war in heaven in which he will be utterly defeated by Michael the archangel and the good angels. No longer having access to heaven, Satan will not be able to accuse the brethren before God as he does at the present time. Satan’s attention will then become even more focused on persecution of the Jews. Satan has had special hated for Jews since the establishment of the Abrahamic covenant, but it will get much worse in the future. The current rise in anti-Jewish rhetoric and persecution by those across the political spectrum is a harbinger of that. Those who hate Jews because they are Jewish are demonically influenced. That would be expected of atheists, agnostics, secularists and those in false religions, cults and false forms of Christianity since they are in Satan’s kingdom and blinded by him. However, demonic deception can also influence true Christians if they remain Biblically ignorant. Being anti-Jewish is contrary to Christian faith since our Savior is Jewish and all the books of the Bible, except perhaps Luke, are Jewish. The Jewish people remain God’s chosen nation, and He will fulfill all of His promises to them including the future Messianic kingdom and “all Israel will be saved” (Romans 11:26). To reject those truths is to reject the Scriptures and make God out to be unfaithful and a liar.

Despite Satan’s effort to destroy them, there will be a remnant of Jews that will flee to the mountains in the wilderness that will be supernaturally protected and provided for by God. Satan’s wrath will then turn to make war against “the rest of her seed,” which will be those Jews that did not flee and the Gentiles that “keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus.” The timing of this will be just after the anti-Christ sets up the abomination of desolation foretold in Daniel 9:27 and Matthew 24:15. The anti-Christ is identified and his character described in the next visions.

The Two Beasts – Revelation 13.The beast from the sea is the future antichrist, and the beast from the earth is his false prophet. They will be the means by which Satan carries out his war against God and those that pursue godliness. Both beasts will be very dangerous. The antichrist will eventually become the military and political dictator over the world. He will be blasphemous to the point of even proclaiming himself to be a god. A counterfeit resurrection will be the cause of many people worshiping him and the dragon, Satan. The false prophet will appear to be gentle, but his smooth speech and deceptions will be very dangerous. The great signs done by the beast’s prophet, both real and fake, will persuade many more to worship the beast. A decree will cut off commerce from those that do not worship the image of the beast and take his mark and subject them to execution. The mark of the beast will be some sort of visible branding or tattoo that will consist of his name whose value calculated by gematria, (the numerical value of each letter added together), will equal 666, which is the number of man. It will be a mocking irony that the very name of the future antichrist who wants to be worshiped as a god will be symbolic that he is yet just a man.

Three Scenes – Revelation 14 brings a forceful and contrasting change in focus with three new scenes. The first is the victorious stance of the Lamb and His followers. The second is of four declarations concerning those who live on the earth. The third is the reaping of the wicked to be cast into the wine press of God’s wrath. Satan’s victories in chapter 13 will be short lived.

The first scene is of the Lamb standing in victory on Mount Zion with the 144,000 Jewish men sealed as His slaves in chapter 7. This will take place at the beginning of the Millennium after Jesus returns to earth as the conquering King of Kings and Lord of Lords detailed in Revelation 19. The victory of the Lamb and all that follow Him over Satan and his followers is absolutely assured.

The second scene involves four declarations that occur before the end of the tribulation that will encourage faithfulness to the Lamb and warn against worship of the beast. The first declaration demonstrates the amazing longsuffering patience of God by having an angel proclaim the eternal gospel to everyone on earth though they have consistently rebelled against Him. The angel warns them to fear God and turn to give Him glory and worship Him who created all things because the hour of His judgment has come. God’s wrath already displayed in the seal and trumpet judgments is the sobering reality of what they will be facing if they do not heed the warning.

The second declaration is by another angel of the same kind as the first that follows immediately behind him declaring “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great, she who has made all the nations drink of the wine of the passion of her immorality.” This backs up the reason to fear God and worship Him. This city, probably Rome or a future rebuilt city of Babylon, that will be wealthy and a center of commerce and perhaps beast worship too, loses its authority, prestige and ability to carry out meaningful economic activity. This is an element of the hour of God’s judgment taking place.

Another angel of the same kind as the previous two makes the third declaration that those who worship the beast and receives his mark is doomed to receive the full measure of God’s wrath. Hell is a real place, and those whose names are not in the Lamb’s book of life will be tormented forever in the lake of fire. The declarations of these three angels could not be more serious – *Fear God and repent to glorify and worship your creator; *God’s wrath will destroy what the world values; *Don’t worship the beast or take his mark.

The fourth declaration will come from a voice out of heaven concerning the blessedness of those who remain faithful even if they are martyred. This is an encouragement that those who are in Christ need not fear death. This has always been a truth no matter the cause of death. Psalm 116:15 states, “Precious in the sight of Yahweh Is the death of His holy ones.” This is a truth that will be especially helpful to those facing an imminent decision that could result in persecution unless they participate in an evil being demanded of them. In the tribulation it will be to join the idolatry of the worship of the beast or be cut off from all commerce and face execution.

The faithful are also encouraged with the promise that “their deeds follow with them.” They will be rewarded in heaven.

Reaping the Earth – Revelation 14:14-20

This brings us to the final vision John receives in this section explaining what will be coming at the end of the tribulation period with the rapid succession of bowl judgments that culminate in the return of Messiah as the conquering King of kings and Lord of lords. It is of two harvests. The first harvest is by the son of man assisted by an angel in reaping the earth. The second harvest is by an angel reaping grapes to throw into the wine press of God’s wrath. Both visions are a warning of God’s coming judgment. His longsuffering patience will reach its end. The sinfulness of man will be fully ripe. There will be no escape for those that remain in rebellion against Him.

The Grain Harvest – Revelation 14:14-16

14 Then I looked, and behold, a white cloud, and sitting on the cloud was one like a son of man, having a golden crown on His head and a sharp sickle in His hand. 15 And another angel came out of the sanctuary, crying out with a loud voice to Him who sits on the cloud, “Put in Your sickle and reap, for the hour to reap has come, because the harvest of the earth is ripe.” 16 Then He who sits on the cloud swung His sickle over the earth, and the earth was reaped.

This passage uses a grain harvest as a metaphor for God’s judgment of the wicked. It begins with the now familiar, “Then I looked, and behold,” or something similar that introduces each new vision or scene to which John is calling to the reader to pay attention. The first thing John notices is a white cloud. A bright cloud is often associated with Jesus when He is in a position of glory. God spoke His approval of Jesus from a bright cloud in the transfiguration (Matthew 17:5). Forty days after His resurrection when Jesus ascended “a cloud received Him out of their sight” (Acts 1:9). In the Olivet Discourse Jesus said he would return “coming on the clouds of the sky” (Matthew 24:30). After Jesus affirmed that He is the Christ, the Son of God, He told Caiaphas that he would “see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven” (Matthew 26:64). When the church is raptured it will be caught up together with those that are asleep in the Lord “in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air” (1 Thess. 4:17). Any or all of these could have been on John’s mind when he saw the white cloud, but then he also sees that “sitting on the cloud was one like a son of man.” The description is another tie between Revelation and the prophecies in Daniel for that is an allusion to the night visions in Daniel 7:13-14 in which “with the clouds of heaven One like a Son of Man was coming.” That prophecy combined with the title “Son of Man” used so often by Jesus of Himself in the gospel accounts points to this being a reference to Jesus.

The description continues that He is wearing a golden crown. This crown is a stevfanoV / stephanos, a symbol of victory which points to His coming conquest. After He has conquered, Jesus will wear many diadems, as a sign of His royalty (Rev. 19:12). He also has a sharp sickle in His hand. A sickle is a large curved knife used to harvest grain by cutting the stalks. This process is known as reaping.

As John looks another angel came out of the sanctuary. That would be the temple in heaven which John measured in chapter 11. This is “another angel” like those making the declarations in the early scenes in this chapter which what he will do next. This does not imply that the son of man is an angel.

This angel then cries out with a loud voice giving instructions to the son of man sitting on the cloud, “Put in Your sickle and reap.” In Greek this directive is literally “send in your sickle and reap” – meaning to start the harvest by using your sickle to cut the grain and gather it into bundles. This directive is urgent, “for the hour to reap has come, because the harvest of the earth is ripe.” The word ripe here, xhraivnomai / x rain , is from a root word meaning “dry” and refers to grain that has fully matured and has dried enough to harvest and store. The contextual meaning here is obviously not to harvesting small grains such as wheat or barley. Its metaphoric meaning and the phrase itself comes from Joel 3:13 to “send in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe” referring to Yahweh’s judgment of the wicked. Jesus used the same metaphor in the parable of the wheat and tares in Matthew 13 in describing the gathering up of the wicked at the end of the age to “throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth” (Matthew 13:42).

Verse 16 describes this harvest taking place. 16 “Then He who sits on the cloud swung His sickle over the earth, and the earth was reaped.” This is another proleptic use of the aorist tense in describing a future event as having already taken place to emphasize the certainty of the action. The double reference to the earth emphasizes that this harvest comes upon those that dwell on the earth. What else do we know about this harvest?

First, from Jesus’ explanation of the parable of the wheat and the tares in Matthew 13:40-43, we know that at the end of the age, which would be the end of the tribulation period, 41 “The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness, 42 and will throw them into the fiery furnace; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43 “Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.”

Second, from Jesus’ teaching on the sheep and goat judgment in His Olivet Discourse in Matthew 25:31- 46, we know that the nations will be gathered before Him, and the goats, the wicked, and the sheep, the righteous, will be separated from each other. The goats will be accursed and cast “into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels.” The sheep will be blessed by the Father and “inherit the kingdom which has been prepared for [them] from the foundation of the world.”

Third, we know from Joel 3:12-17 that both this metaphoric grain harvest in Revelation 14:14-26 and the grape harvest described in verses 17-20 are connected. Yahweh commands in Joel 3:13, “Send in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe. Come, tread, for the wine press is full; The vats overflow, for their evil is great.” The passage then goes on to describe events that occur during the great tribulation including the sun and moon growing dark and the stars losing their brightness. Look now at Revelation 14:17-20 as we examine the grape harvest.

The Grape Harvest – Revelation 14:17-20

17 And another angel came out of the sanctuary which is in heaven, and he also had a sharp sickle. 18 Then another angel, the one who has authority over fire, came out from the altar; and he called with a loud voice to him who had the sharp sickle, saying, “Put in your sharp sickle and gather the clusters from the vine of the earth, because her grapes are ripe.” 19 So the angel swung his sickle to the earth and gathered the clusters from the vine of the earth, and threw them into the great wine press of the wrath of God. 20 And the wine press was trodden outside the city, and blood came out from the wine press, up to the horses’ bridles, for a distance of 1,600 stadia.

This is another angel of the same type as the previous ones in this chapter that have made declarations. This angel also comes out of the temple in heaven, but he also has a sharp sickle. The sickle used for harvesting grapes is smaller than the ones used for cutting grain stalks, but it also has a sharp, curved blade for cutting the stem connecting the grape cluster to the vine. He does not say anything. Instead, yet another angel, this would be sixth in this chapter, comes out from the altar which is in the temple to give him instructions. This sixth angel is one that has authority over the fire on the altar. Recall from Revelation 8:5 that it was a censor filled with fire from that golden altar of incense that an angel cast to earth that began the trumpet judgments. As in Revelation 8, this connects this action as a response to the imprecatory prayers of the martyred saints.

This sixth angel tells the fifth angel who had the sharp sickle to use it to “gather the clusters from the vine of the earth, because her grapes are ripe.”  There is urgency to this command because the grapes are ripe. The word ripe here, ajkmavzw / akmaz , is different from the word used for mature grain. This word means “to be a prime.” God had been longsuffering and patient just has He had with the Amorites. God did not allow Abraham’s descendants to conquer and possess their land until over four hundred years after the promise because “the iniquity of the Amorite was not yet complete.” Once it was complete, Joshua came and conquered them. When the sin of those that dwell on the earth becomes ripe, it will be time to reap the harvest and judge them. The angel proclaims that time has come.

The angel does as directed and harvests the clusters from the vine of the earth, and then “threw them into the great wine press of the wrath of God.” A wine press consisted of two vats. The grape clusters were tossed into the upper one where they would be trampled to burst the grape and squeeze out its juice which would then run in a trough to a lower vat where the juice would be collected. This same imagery of God’s wrath being as a wine press is used in Isaiah 63:1-6; Lamentations 1:15, Joel 3:13 and Revelation 19:15.

Verse 20 uses this imagery of a wine press to give a gruesome description of God’s wrath being carried out. “And the wine press was trodden outside the city, and blood came out from the wine press, up to the horses’ bridles, for a distance of 1,600 stadia.” While the particular city is not identified by name, other similar prophecies point to it being Jerusalem. Joel 3:12-14 identifies this action to take place in the valley of Jehoshaphat, now known as the Kidron Valley just to the west of the Mount of Olives which is the location of the Messiah’s physical return to the earth (Zechariah 14:4). This description would fit what is expected in the final battles against the Lord in which the armies of the world gather in the plains of Megiddo (Armageddon) to war against God (Rev. 16:13-16; 19:17-21), but that will be a wide ranging battle which will also include armies of all the nations gathered against Jerusalem (Zechariah 12:3; 14:2-3). That can explain the blood flow of 1,600 stadia which is about 200 miles which is about the distance from Megiddo to the Red Sea. The depth of the blood was up to the horse’s bridle, which would be 3 ½ – 4 feet for a horse the size of an Arabian. That would refer to its greatest depth, not the depth 200 miles away. With the amount of carnage in that battle, that depth in a stream bed might be possible, but it is more likely this is a reference to the height of the blood being splattered up on a horse as it went through the area. Either way, the imagery is gruesome and astounding in the slaughter recorded. We will go into more detail about this future battle when we get to Revelation 19:17.

The attempt of evil mankind to make war against God reveals the depth of their depravity and also the blindness to reality that depravity brings. There are plenty of people in the present time that fit Paul’s description in Romans 1:21-22 who profess to be wise, but have become fools because they have become futile in their speculations and their hearts have become darkened. They can be arrogant and boastful, but they are without understanding, and the depravity of their minds prevents reasoned conversation and logical conclusions. That is already commonly experienced with such people concerning many political and social issues. You cannot have a civil discourse with them. What is bad now will only get worse in the future.

However, since it is not yet that time period, there is still hope. The gospel is still being proclaimed and people can still repent from their sins to believe in the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ and receive forgiveness for their sins and be adopted into God’s family. If you are not yet a Christian, then today is the day of salvation. Do not put off getting right with God any longer. You do not know how long your life will last. If you are a believer, then be diligent to grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, to serve Him, worship Him, and proclaim the good news of salvation from sin through faith in Him to others. We exist as a church to help you in all of these areas, but you have to get involved to take advantage of the help offered. That includes personal involvement with one another as well as the broader church ministries.

KIDS KORNER
Parents, you are responsible to apply God’s Word to your children’s lives. Here is some help. Young Children – draw a picture about something you hear during the sermon. Explain your picture(s) to your parents at lunch. Older Children – Do one or more of the following: 1) Count how many times the word “Revelation” is said. 2) Discuss with your parents what you understand about the book of Revelation, & what will happen to the wicked.

THINK ABOUT IT!
Questions to consider in discussing the sermon with others. Write out an outline of the major sections of Revelation 1-14. How does Revelation 12-14 fit into the flow of the message of the book? How does Revelation 14:14-20 fit into the flow of what occurs in chapter 14? How do we know these two harvests are metaphors for God’s wrath coming upon the wicked? What are the similarities between both harvests and what are the differences? How do Matthew 13:40-43 & 25:31-46 help us understand the first harvest metaphor. How do Joel 3:12-17; Isa. 63:1-6; Lam. 1:15; Rev. 16:13-16; 19:17-21 & Zech. 12:3; 14:2-3 help us understand the second?
