Ocean Commotion – VBS Sermon
2 Peter 3:1-9 ; Genesis 1-11

Introduction

We had a great Vacation Bible School this week with an average of over 80 children attending each day, which is about twice what we have had in past years. Praise the Lord that we had to bust our budget! We are grateful for the opportunity to present the gospel and the truth of God’s word to all that attended. Some have not heard the gospel before. Some have heard it but have not yet responded in faith. Others have responded in faith but are encouraged and strengthened by hearing it all again.

Our program this year was “Ocean Commotion: Diving into Noah’s Flood” from Answers in Genesis. The lessons to the children covered the pre-flood world, the fall of man into sin, the building of the ark, fitting everything into the ark, the flood itself, the aftermath of the flood and God’s promises. Just as the only door to safety from the flood was the one in the side of the ark, so the only door to safety from God’s future judgment is Jesus Christ who said in John 10:9, “I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved . . .” Jesus paid the redemption price for man’s sin when He willingly died on the cross at Calvary so that He could offer forgiveness and eternal life to all who believe in Him.

As I was going over lessons each day and reviewing the material that had been presented the previous day, I was reminded of 2 Peter 3:1-2, 1 “This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you in which I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, 2 that you should remember the words spoken beforehand by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken by your apostles.”

It is in this spirit that I want to speak to you this morning about creation, the flood, its evidences, and God’s promises for the future. I have spoken about these subjects many times in the past, so for some of you this will simply be a reminder of what you already know that I hope will encourage you. For others, this will be a repeat that I hope will stimulate you to actually believe the truth. And for others, this may be the first time you have heard these things.

My goal is to honor God by declaring the truth of His word even though most of what I say today is rejected by most of society. Evolutionary scientists, whether atheistic or theistic, will say I am a kook, but I challenge them and anyone affected by their teaching to look at the empirical evidence and then consider with an open mind not forced into the philosophical requirements of evolution and long ages what it actually reveals. I know that is not easy, for I too was once ignorant of the truth. By God’s grace I had many classes in hard sciences such as chemistry and physics along with training in experimental design so that when challenged to go beyond textbooks and classroom lectures to research things for myself, I had the background to be able to evaluate and conclude that I had wrongly assumed and trusted my teachers. The truth was they were only repeating the lies they had been taught within a philosophical system that rejects the God of the Bible. That is why I challenge you to do your own research.

The apostle Peter exposes the realities of our own time when he said in 2 Peter 3:3-7, 3 “Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts, 4 and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation.” 5 For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water, 6 through which the world at that time was destroyed, being flooded with water. 7 But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

This is an accurate description of our own time as mockers “suppress the truth in unrighteousness” (Romans 1:18) in denying both the declaration of God in the Scriptures and the empirical evidence all around them. They have a desperate quest to promote an alternative explanation for the world we live in lest they are forced to admit that God has judged this world in the past for sin, for if God has done that, then they will be held accountable when He judges this world in the future just as He has warned.

The creation – evolution controversy is a clash of worldviews and philosophy, not science, for facts are facts. The conflict is in the interpretation of facts as demanded by the competing belief systems. Those who hold to any version of theistic evolution, however well intentioned they may be, ultimately have a God that is different from the one described in the Bible. Their God lacks multiple moral attributes because He allowed death prior to sin, and lacks the ability to communicate truthfully to His creatures since Genesis 1-11 is forced to be mythical stories that are not true.

We believe that God is eternal, omniscient, omnipotent, sovereign, good, kind, loving, just, merciful and gracious. We believe that He can and has communicated to His us in His word and truthfully revealed what He has done. We believe that Genesis is an accurate historical record. We also believe the evidence – biologic, geologic, chemical, physical, astronomical and anthropological – overwhelmingly supports the Genesis accounts. For the rest of this morning we are going to make a quick examination of Genesis 1-11 along with some of the evidence that still exists today that supports the truthfulness of those chapters.

The Days of Creation – Genesis 1 & 2

We begin with the first day of Creation recorded in Genesis 1:1-5. It is important that we let the author define meaning of the terms that he uses if we are to honestly understand what he is communicating. The major problems with interpretation of Genesis begin with scholars defining terms according to their own understanding instead of according to what the author actually writes.

Genesis 1:1–5, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. 3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.

Notice that the word “day” (yom) is defined in two different ways. First, it is used to signify the period of light. Second, it is used to count the sequence of a period of darkness and light. The sequence of evening and morning is one day. That same phrase is used to mark the time period of what took place on each of the next five days – vs. 8, 13, 19, 23 and 31. There was evening and morning . . . second day, third day, fourth day, fifth day, sixth day. This precise sequence to define a day negates all interpretations that seek to make this time period longer the six days – six sequences of evening and morning – stated.

On the first day, God created the heavens and earth and also light, then separated the light from the darkness.

On the second day, God made and expanse between waters that were above and waters that were below and called that expanse, heaven.

On the third day, God first gathered the waters together so that land appeared. He called the dry land earth and the gathered waters seas. God then brought forth every kind of vegetation and plants yielding seed. Each plant would reproduce after its kind.

On the fourth day, God put lights in the heavens – the sun, moon and stars – to govern the day, the night and be signs for seasons, days and years.

On the fifth day, God first made all the living creatures of the water. This would not only be fish, but all other creatures that living the sea – whales and dolphins, lobsters and crabs, sea urchins and star fish, jelly fish and squids, eels and anemones, etc., etc. God also brought fourth every winged flying thing. That would include not only birds, but probably also bats, pterosaurs and perhaps flying insects too. Each was to reproduce after its own kind and multiply and fill the earth.

On the sixth day, God brought forth all the land animals that walk, crawl or creeps on the ground. This would include not only mammals such as cattle, horses, sheep, bears, gorillas, giraffes and chipmunks, but also reptiles such as alligators, snakes and dinosaurs, arthropods such as spiders, scorpions and insects, and other strange creatures such as a duck-billed platypus. While we are unsure about which day creatures that live on both land and water such as amphibians, seals and turtles were made, we can be sure if they were not made on day five with the water creatures, their creation was only delayed one day to day six.

God’s last act of creation was man, whom He made male and female. Genesis 2 gives a more detailed account of God forming Adam from the dust of the ground and fashioning Eve out of one of Adam’s ribs and establishing them in the Garden and Eden as husband and wife. God charged them with having dominion over all the creatures and to be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.

God completed the work of creation on the sixth day, and then rested from creating things on the seventh day sanctifying it and establishing it as a pattern for man.

Now before we go further, I must point out that the order of creation is completely contrary to evolution. The two cannot be made compatible with each other.

Order of Creation vs. Evolution

Evolution                                       Creation

Matter is eternal                            God is eternal (1)

Sun & stars before Earth               Earth before Sun & stars (1,14)

Sun: Earth’s first light                    Light before Sun (3,16)

Sun before plants                          Plants before Sun (11,16)

Land before seas                          Seas before land (3,10)

First Life: Marine cells                   First life; Land plants (11)

Fish before trees                           Trees before fish (11, 20)

Reptiles before birds                       Birds before reptiles (20, 24)

In order to believe evolution, God is small and Genesis 1 must be considered a fallacious myth of some sort. The God I serve, the God of the Bible, is not only able to create everything in six days as He claims, He is able to communicate clearly to man what He has done. To say that He did not create the world as He reveals in Genesis 1is to call Him a liar, and God does not lie (Numbers 23:19).

The Fall of Man – Genesis 3-6

While Adam and Eve were in the Garden of Eden, they had nothing to fear including dinosaurs because there was not yet any death and all the animals ate only plants. We do not know how long Adam and Eve lived in Eden in such perfection and bliss, but at some point the devil used a serpent to deceive Eve and break God’s one commandment of prohibition. Genesis 3 records the fall of man. Adam and Eve could eat of any tree in the garden except the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, but the serpents’ lies enticed Eve to believe that God was withholding something good from her. She saw that the fruit was good for food, a delight to the eyes and desirable to make her wise like God, so she disobeyed and ate, then gave it to Adam and he also ate and mankind was plunged into sin. Adam and Eve separated themselves from God. They spiritually died that very day. God confronted them and cursed them, but He also gave a hope of future redemption in one who would come and crush the serpent’s head. He then sent them out of the Garden of Eden. The world was cursed and with thorns, thistles, pain and death.

Genesis 4 records how quickly sin progressed in the heart of man with Cain, the first born son, becoming jealous and murdering his brother, Abel. The chapter continues with a record of Cain and his descendants including polygamy by the sixth generation along with murder out of vengeance.

Genesis 5 records basic information about ten generations from Adam to Noah through Seth. This is the godly line. These men lived incredibly long lives averaging 907 years except for Enoch who did not die but whom God took directly to heaven at age 365. The life span of all of them except Adam, Seth and Enoch would have overlapped Noah’s life. But as amazing as their longevity is to us, the sad fact is that the record is one of death. Each lived so long, had a particular son at some particular age, then lived so many years longer and died. Adam’s curse extends to all of his descendants.

Genesis 6 records that the corruption of man became worse reaching the point after only about 1,550 years from creation that verse 5 records, Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” The Lord then determined that He would blot out man from the face of the earth, but Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord and He gave Noah instructions on building an ark that would preserve life through the coming flood that would destroy the world that then existed.

The Ark – Genesis 6

At this point I need to clear up a false idea that is commonly believed because of the influence of evolutionary thought upon society. Ancient man was extremely intelligent and technology advanced quickly from scratch. Even modern technology is built upon what was discovered by those who were before us, and your own knowledge is built up over time as you learn from others and discover things for yourself. The tragedy of our much shorter lives now is that when you finally have enough years of learning and experience to have wisdom, your body, including your mind, is decaying so that you cannot take full advantage of that wisdom. Imagine the knowledge you could gain if you lived 900 years without significant physical or mental decline. Imagine how quickly technology would advance with so many people living such long lives. By the seventh generation, descendants of Cain had already figured out music playing both pipes and lyre, a stringed instrument, and how to forge implements of bronze and iron (Genesis 4:21-22).

Though there would have been a huge loss of technological knowledge at both the flood and the tower of Babel, the physical evidence left by ancient man shows amazing intelligence. Don Landis records many of these evidences in his book, The Genius of Ancient Man: Evolution’s Nightmare. There are sites around the world that remain mysterious to us of how ancient people were able to do them. Massive stones are precision cut and moved great distances and then put into place with tolerances that do not allow a knife blade to fit between them, and often precisely aligned with an astronomical event such as a solstice, equinox or particular star constellation. They also had advanced mathematical, engineering and navigation skills. The ancient Persians built underground aqueducts 3,000 years ago. The ancient Indus Valley civilization is credited with the world’s first urban sanitation system. The Vikings are known to have traveled to North America about 1,000 AD, but there is evidence of transoceanic travel long before that. One of the more interesting finds was Parthian batteries dating back about 2,000 years – probably used for medical purposes. People assume that cavemen lacked intelligence, but how well could you do at making a precise musical instrument from a leg bone without the use of any modern tools?

It is not unreasonable in any way to believe that by the time Noah starts building the Ark that technology has advanced far enough to enable him to design and build a craft that would 1) be large enough to hold a pair of every kind of land animal that breaths air along with all the food needed to last more than a year, and 2) be able to withstand the cataclysm that was to come.

Genesis 6:14-16 records the size and basic construction of the ark. It would 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide and 30 cubits high. Depending on the size of the cubit – the length from your elbow to the tip of your finger, that would be between 438′ & 510′ long, 73′ & 85′ wide, and 44′ & 51′ high with a volume of between 1.4 and 2.2 million cubic feet. (About the width of our parking lot, as tall as the steeple and extending out in the field to the tree line). It would be made out of gopher wood and covered with pitch inside and out. It would have three decks and rooms so it would have a total deck area of between 95,700 and 130,000 square feet. This is more than enough capacity for all the animals and their food to have to fit inside. Noah only needed to take one pair of each “kind,” not “species,” of air breathing animals that could not survive outside the ark. The average size of all animals is about that of a small rabbit, and Noah could have brought smaller juveniles instead of adults. Many animals could also have gone into diapause or hibernation which would have reduced the work load in caring for them.

While we do not have access to the ark to know precisely what it looked like and how it was made, examination of ancient boats gives us some clues such as having something to catch the water to stabilize it, something to catch the wind to turn it into the waves so it would not capsize, and planking to increase its sturdiness and reduce leakage.

It could also have had a system for collecting rain for fresh water as well as some system to eliminate waste such as a moon pool – essentially a water closet with an open bottom and baffles at the top so water can exit but cannot enter the interior of the ship.

The Flood – Genesis 7-8

God tells Noah to enter the ark and then God shut the door. The opportunity existed prior to that for anyone to join Noah and his family safely inside the ark, but once God shut the door, all those outside the ark were condemned.

The flood begins when the fountains of the deep burst forth and the floodgates of the sky were opened. This is a cataclysm that is very difficult to contemplate. It is reasonably thought that the earth ruptures along what is now the “Mid-Atlantic ridge” (which extends around the earth) with such force that material is ejected into space. The waters from under the earth geyser out and then pour down. The water level rises for 150 days until every mountain is covered by at least 15 cubits – about 22 feet. All air breathing land animals outside the ark perish. Only those in the ark survive. Jesus Himself affirms the truth of this in Matthew 24:37-39.

The waters begin to recede, but it is 224 days before the tops of the mountains can be seen from where the ark has come to rest on the mountains of Ararat. It is 314 days before the waters dry up enough that Noah removes the ark’s covering. It is 371 days before God tells Noah that he can leave the ark.

Noah’s first action after getting out of the ark is to offer sacrifices to God in thanksgiving for the survival of all who were in the ark. The animals spread out over the earth. Noah begins to farm again.

Results of the Flood

The Genesis flood has left its marks everywhere, but as I pointed out earlier from 2 Peter 3, mockers deny it anyway. This denial has been a hindrance to geology since the mid-1800’s when Charles Lyell proposed uniformitarianism – the slow processes of the present are the key to the past – as the means of understanding geology. Only in the last couple of decades has catastrophism made some headway because the evidence of massive geological changes due to past catastrophes it is overwhelming. Let me quickly point out some of the evidences of the Genesis flood.

1) In Genesis 9:13-16 God will set His bow in the clouds as the sign that He will not destroy the world again by water. The rainbow can only be a sign if it is due to something that changed after the flood, and something did change. Sunlight hitting rain drops reflects and refracts like a prism causing the light to be separated into its various wavelengths which we see as colors. Genesis 2:5 states that God had not sent rain upon the earth and instead the earth was watered by a mist that rose from the ground. Until the flood, there was no rain for a bow to form in the clouds. You must have rain and sunlight in order to see a rainbow in the clouds.

2) Genesis 8:3,5 and Psalm 104:6-8 indicated that the flood waters drained as the mountains rose and the valleys sank. Without getting into the mechanisms for its cause, the continental plates which had been covered by flood sediments crashed into each other causing mountains to be pushed up much like two sticks of modeling clay smashed together. The sediment layers would fold and buckle as is seen all around the world. The fossils in those sediments rise with the mountains which is why there are marine fossils in the sedimentary layers of Mount Everest. The weight of rock either removed or deposited would cause other areas to correspondingly rise or sink.

3) Tetonic Changes. We would expect that the amount of water moving rapidly during and following the flood would cause extreme erosion and create massive areas of water borne and sorted rock fragments to be laid down to become sedimentary rocks. The Grand Canyon is a cut through 4,500 feet of sedimentary rock. Most of the United States is covered by a megasequence of sedimentary rocks – meaning each layer is laid on top of another in rapid succession. The area is too much too large to be explained by any form of slow deposition over a long period of time. The Tibetan Plateau covers an area of about 750,000 square miles. Again, these are areas far too large to be explained by any method of slow accumulation over a long period of time. All these tectonic changes are easily explained by the Genesis flood.

4) Fossil graveyards. Fossils can only form if there is either rapid mineralization or quick burial to keep the biologic material from being scavenged, rotting or torn apart by physical forces. The Genesis flood would produce the conditions for massive fossilization, and there are fossil graveyards found around the world. Some of these fossils show rapid burial causing instant death such those of fish eating other fish when buried and fossilized, or the ichthyosaur that was buried while giving birth and then fossilized. The soft tissue preserved in some specimens not only shows rapid burial, but also that they are not that old. Polystrate fossils, those that extend through multiple layers of sedimentary rock, also prove rapid deposition because the bottom layer cannot be millions of years older than the top layer of the fossil. The whole fossil would have had to have been buried at the same time to be preserved.

5) Climate change. The world was radically different following the Genesis flood, and it would take those conditions to bring about the ice age. Glaciers form when the amount of snowfall exceeds the amount of snow melt. Warm oceans and cool continents, made even cooler by volcanic dust in the atmosphere, would produce massive amounts of snowfall with little melting in the Summer. It is estimated that 30% of the land surface became covered with continental glaciers that reached up to 2,300 feet thick. It is estimated that it would have taken about 500 years for the ice to accumulate and 200 years for it to melt to its present state.

The Warning and Offer of Hope – 2 Peter 3:7-9

2 Peter 3 gives a strong warning of God’s future judgment of the earth by fire. He goes on to say in verse 10 that it will be so intense that the very elements will melt and the earth and all its works will be burned up. But Peter also offers hope for he says in verses 8 & 9, “But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. 9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.

The Lord’s command is that people repent from their sin and place their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. He is patient and longsuffering, and as verse 15 states, we regard the patience of the Lord to be salvation for it means another moment, another day in which people are given a chance to repent. But that time does not extend indefinitely. There will come a time, just as when God shut the door to the ark, that the final call will have been issued and there will no longer be opportunity, and only those who trust the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ will be saved. He is the way, the truth and the life and no one comes to the Father except through Him. Everyone else will perish in God’s judgment.

Are you safe in Jesus Christ? If so, be confident regardless of the storms of life you may be facing. He is the ark of salvation that can carry you through. Also, be diligent to live for God’s glory and not the things of this world, for they are going to burn anyway, so what manner of life should you be living? (2 Peter 3:11-13).

If you have not put your trust in Christ or you are unsure, then do not let another day go by. Talk to any of our church leaders and get right with God today. You may not have tomorrow.

KIDS KORNER
Parents, you are responsible to apply God’s Word to your children’s lives. Here is some help. Young Children – draw a picture about something you hear during the sermon. Explain your picture(s) to your parents at lunch. Older Children – Do one or more of the following: 1) Write down all the verses mentioned in the sermon and look them up later. 2) Count how many times the word “flood” is used. Talk with your parents about Noah and the flood and the evidence that it is true history.

THINK ABOUT IT!

Questions to consider in discussing the sermon with others. How is 2 Peter 3:3-7 an accurate description of our own time? Explain. Is the Creation – Evolution a science controversy? Explain. What are the two definitions given to the word “day” in Genesis 1? Can the time element in Genesis 1 be extended to multiple years without destroying the meaning of the text? Explain. Describe what happens on each day of creation? Compare the order of creation verses the order of evolutionary theory – can they be made compatible? Explain. When did death enter creation and why? Why is the world we live corrupt and evil? What does Genesis 4 record? Why is that important? What was the average age of those recorded in Genesis 5 (excluding Enoch)? Why did people live so long then? What happened to Enoch? What happened to everyone else? What was mankind like 1,550 years after Creation? What is necessary to develop technology? Was ancient man intelligent? Explain. Did ancient man develop technology? Explain. How big was Noah’s ark? Could the ark have held all the animals, their food and water? Explain. What was the physical cause of the flood? How deep was the water? How long did the water cover the earth? When did Noah get out of the ark? Why was the ark necessary? How does a rainbow form? Why is a rainbow in the clouds a genuine sign that God will not destroy the earth again by water? How will God destroy the earth in the future? How do mountains form? Can sedimentary rock layers be bent and folded if the rock is hard? How do fossils form? How does the flood explain massive and widespread fossilization? Can massive plateaus and transcontinental sedimentary rock layers be explained by any current geologic processes? Explain. How can the flood explain the formation of those geologic features? What conditions are needed to form an ice age? How does the flood create those conditions?
